As 4300 cyclists took part in the Dis-Chem ride for sight on Sunday the 13th of February 2011, Birchwood Hotel once again made sure that the MC for the event, Johnny Koen, was well rested and ready to motivate all the participants of this worthy cause.
Annually the Dis-Chem ride for sight brings thousands of cyclists to the East Rand and the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre is proud to be associated with this event by means of accommodating not only the MC, but also travellers from far and wide.
This year’s event was a resounding success and congratulations go out to Christoff van Heerden (who won the race in a time of 02:29:50 bettering his winning time from last year by 8 minutes!) and Cherise Taylor (this was Cherise’s 3rd win). The real winners of course, are all the people who benefit from what the race stands for, the fight against retinal blindness.

In true Birchwood Spirit, Clint Cosgrave (IT Manager for Birchwood Hotel), also took part in the Ride for site challenge. Clint rode in tandem with Olympic Bronze Medallist and Retina SA Ambassador, Gavin Kilpatrick who is a visually impaired cyclist! Gavin and Clint came first in the disabled tandem category and in our hearts.
