INTIMATE EVENING WITH AFRO-TENORS & DON LAKA!
OPENING: AFRO-TENORSMAIN: DON LAKA
The Oude Meester Ekurhuleni Comes Alive jazz evening opens the 2011 calendar and the year to celebrate its 10 year anniversary in a smooth and intimate style. On Friday 11th February 2011, Afro-Tenors and Don Laka will lead the way into a romantic evening before lovers celebrate Valentine’s day three days later. This is the year to celebrate the concept which has reached 10 years of unearthing South African Jazz artists while offering job opportunities to other experienced jazz artists once a month at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg. Looking back, the concept started very small, attracting 20 people in its first two months before taking off in 3rd Month by breaking into attracting 150 patrons. From that evening as once recalls, the sky became the limit. Today the concept averages between 800 and 1000 patrons per month per event.
With these stats in mind, we anticipate a very busy year for the hotel and the concept and have decided to start on a smooth key note. The two artists couldn’t be a better choice for opening our 2011 calendar. The AFRO-TENORS together with DON LAKA are not new to the set up and have promised to make the evening one to remember as part of the big celebration. One should not attribute the success of the concept to too many factors, but the one that stands out is the support by our media partners, Oude Meester brandy who stood the test of time from the inception, Kaya FM, DSTV, and recently the City of Ekurhuleni for adopting the name and taking the naming rights of the concept. One will not forget to thank our loyal patrons, and the Birchwood kitchen staff for keeping our patrons coming back for our three course meal to die for every month.

As of 1 December 2010, Wasteplan Waste Management Company have been operating at the Birchwood Hotel. As Silver status operators with Heritage Environmental Management Company, Wasteplan will assist the Birchwood with achieving its goal to reach Gold Status with Heritage in 2011.
The contract between Wasteplan and Birchwood Hotel seeks to improve every aspect of waste management from garden to food refuse. The policy that has been employed is “separation at source”, meaning that all recyclable items are separated immediately within each Centre. In order to do this, all Birchwood staff are being educated and trained to identify which items are separated into which categories as opposed to the conventional method of having one team which sifts through and separates all the items at one place.
The above mentioned methodology allows for better monitoring by management; more economical and eco-friendly waste management as well as better reporting. In order to achieve a Gold Heritage status, Birchwood must be able to accurately report on each and every aspect of waste management procedures.
Goals for 2011 include reducing the current disposal of waste into the Birchwood compactor down to one compactor a month, and increase the number of food disposal units on the property. Currently Birchwood has one 5hp unit with a 3 phase motor which has the capability to even shred red meat bones. This means that all wet food waste is disposed of in a bio-friendly manner on the property! Garden greens will be chipped and re-used in the compost process, creating a sustainable model for all garden refuse.

On the 25th of November the Restaurant Association South Africa awarded the Local Grill Restaurant the following awards:
The Local Grill is known for its quality approach on fine dining and based on the concept of an old-fashioned butcher-style grill house, the Local Grill offers grain fed Chalmar beef and healthier Greenfield free-range beef from the Midlands. All beef is aged on the premises and diners are informed of the length of the ageing process. Upon request the beef is cut to order, seasoned and perfectly grilled. The Local Grill has four branches in Hurlingham Manor, Parktown North, Ten Bompas (Dunkeld) and proudly opened its doors on the Birchwood Hotel premises in June 2010.
The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre would like to congratulate the Local Grill for this fantastic achievement.
If sport has anything to do with goodwill, creating and forging new relationships then Birchwood is the place to do just that. After successfully hosting International football village and partnering with two of South Africa’s top PSL teams in Moroka Swallows FC & Mpumalanga Black Aces FC the hotel is now donating to charity by way of sports.David Kleynhans is an accomplished cyclist who is using his talent to raise both funds and awareness for the elderly. Through his past travels, David has witnessed a number of impoverished communities where little or no assistance is offered to the elderly. This revelation has struck a chord quite close to David’s heart and as a result he has opted to cycle from Cape Town to Johannesburg and back again. It is in that spirit that the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre has opted to support this venture by becoming an official venue sponsor for his press conference and three night’s accommodation on dinner bed and breakfast while he is in Johannesburg resting. The F.R.A.I.L (Friendship; Relatives; Acceptance; Involvement and Love) tour will commence on the 14th of November, with David arriving at Birchwood Hotel as part of his Johannesburg pit-stop on the 18th of November. David will then exhibit at the 94.7 expo as well as part-take in the 94.7 cycle challenge – NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE! Immediately after the race, he will depart form Johannesburg and begin the second leg of his tour back to Cape Town. David will end this amazing feat and return to his home city on the 25th of November. The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre became aware of David’s cause through Birchwood employee Clint Cosgrave who is an avid cyclist and will be taking part in the 94.7 cycle challenge on a tandem with esteemed cycling legend& Olympic Bronze Medallist, Gavin Kilpatrick, in the Pink Drive’s colours in honour of breast cancer awareness. Birchwood Hotel has also pledged a cash sponsorship and is proud to be associated with these two worthy causes.David Kleyhans’s press conference will be held in the Yellow wood conference room at Birchwood Hotel on the 18th of November from 8am.
